A Coal Town Built On Old Pipe

Mining-era cottages

The suburb grew from two coal villages, one of them Plattsburg, and its oldest homes are pre-1940 weatherboard and fibro cottages near Nelson Street and Cowper Street. Many of them still take water through their original galvanised steel pipe, which corrodes on the inside and narrows the flow year by year.

Under the cottages
